Scientific Officer in the National Reference Laboratory for Materials in Contact with Food

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

The following permanent position is now available in the “Product Analytics” unit in the BfR’s Chemical and Product Safety department:

Scientific officer in the National Reference Laboratory for

Materials in Contact with Food (F/M/X)

Part-time employment is possible. Subject to an appropriate period of probation this position enables promotion up to pay grade 14. Remuneration will be paid in line with the tasks undertaken and the applicant's qualifications.

Tasks:

The ‘Product Analytics’ unit engages in the development of analysis methods to determine substances that migrate and emit from food contact materials and consumer products. The unit is home to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for food contact materials.

The individual tasks include:

  1. Work at the National Reference Laboratory for Materials in Contact with Food, a laboratory accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025
  2. Development, optimisation and validation of modern analytical methods for determining the migration of substances from food contact materials into food and food simulants on the basis of e.g. LC-MS/MS, LC-HR-MS/MS, LC-DAD/ -FLD/ -CAD, GC-FID, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, online-LC-GC-FID, GC×GC-ToF-MS, LC-LC-GC-MS/MS and ICP-MS
  3. Supervision and guidance of laboratory staff and scientific personnel, statistical evaluation and assessment of measurement results
  4. Scientific conceptualisation and monitoring of national and international round-robin tests, statistical evaluation of results and reporting on time
  5. Planning, initiation and scientific monitoring of research projects focussing on chemical analysis, in particular for determining the migration of substances from food contact materials; supervision and guidance of students, doctoral students and postdocs
  6. Writing scientific publications, presentations and project reports as well as participating in national and international conferences
  7. Assessing studies with regard to the validity of applied analytical methods and the robustness of analytical data
  8. Participation in BfR committees and their subordinate committees as well as representation of the BfR on national and international panels
  9. Maintenance and further development of the quality management system and the laboratory information and management software (LIMS) and representing the laboratory as a study director (“Prüfleitung”)

Your profile:

  • University degree (master’s, diploma or equivalent university degree) in chemistry, analytical chemistry, food chemistry or a similar subject
  • Relevant professional experience in the domain of analytical chemistry, preferably with several of the aforementioned analytical techniques
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written English and German
  • Good knowledge of standard IT applications, a conscientious way of working, flexibility, the ability to work in a team, resilience, and the willingness to travel on business are required

Desired:

  • Doctorate
  • Proven ability to undertake independent scientific work e.g. through publications
  • Practical knowledge of the development and validation of multi-analyte methods (e.g. for plasticisers, PFAS, primary aromatic amines) as well as with common extraction and sample preparation methods
  • Expertise in the analysis of food and/or food contact materials
  • Knowledge of servicing, maintenance and troubleshooting as well as confident use of common control and evaluation software packages for common large-scale analytical equipment
  • A scientific stay abroad
  • Experience in successfully acquiring third-party funding (grants, research projects)
  • Relevant experience with the quality management of an analytical chemical laboratory accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 and experience with using LIMS
