We are looking for a Head of Legal Services to lead our Legal and Freedom of Information (FOI) teams, and instruct specialist external legal advisers as required. 

You will provide expert, timely legal advice across a diverse range of activities, covering the academic and commercial operations of the University in order to mitigate the risk of strategic, operational, reputational and financial harm to the University. You will also need to review legislative and regulatory changes which may impact on the University and prepare briefing papers for the senior management team to ensure risks, opportunities and required interventions are understood and addressed.

You will line manage two Legal Advisers and two Freedom of Information Officers. You will also be responsible for approving and instructing specialist external legal advice as necessary. Due to the nature of the work, there may occasionally be a need to provide legal advice outside normal office hours.

Our ideal candidate:

  • A qualified solicitor or barrister able to practise in England and Wales
  • Experience with Freedom of Information and compliance
  • Experience synthesising complex legal issues
  • Experience leading legal teams on a range of matters including inter alia employment, contracts and litigation
  • An excellent communicator written and verbally, especially with non-legal colleagues
  • Highly effective as a line manager, able to motivate and develop staff
  • A confident decision maker

The new Department of Risk, Resilience and Compliance was launched in January 2023. The Department brings together a number of related assurance functions including operational resilience, risk management, compliance, legal services, data protection, FOI and internal audit. Our expanding team is innovative and dynamic, with a collaborative and holistic approach to enhancing resilience and mitigating risk. We work closely with colleagues across the organisation, providing guidance and support, and we report to management boards and governance committees, providing assurance and recommendations for action.
