Job Summary

The Institute of Photonics and Quantum Science (IPaQS) at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh is seeking a talented new colleague to join our thriving community of researchers. We invite applications from outstanding early career scientists for a permanent Assistant Professorship in Physics, with a focus on Quantum Science and Technology (QST). We are looking for candidates whose research programme will strongly complement our existing strengths in Quantum Photonics research at IPaQS.  

Detailed Description

You will be expected to build an independent research group carrying out cutting-edge research in your field. You will demonstrate the ability to develop and lead independent research in QST, and possess a track-record of excellent scientific output commensurate with your career stage. You will show the capacity to obtain independent funding for your research and form strong interdisciplinary collaborations both within and beyond IPaQS.

Key duties and responsibilities

The post holder is required to:

  • Actively engaging in and disseminating research while contributing to the University’s research profile.
  • Supervising and mentoring undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and postdoctoral research associates.
  • Actively pursuing research funding through the development of high-quality grant proposals.
  • Developing internal and external collaborative research links and networks.
  • Carrying out Institute administrative duties as well as contributing to School and University activities.
  • Developing and delivering research-led teaching through lectures and labs.

Essential Criteria 

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline 
  • Postdoctoral experience in the field of quantum science and technology (QST)
  • Track record of exciting and high-impact research in QST, evidenced by a strong publication record commensurate to career stage.
  • Strategy and ability to develop and sustain an ambitious research programme at IPaQS
  • Potential to attract independent research funding from external national and international sources.
  • Academic leadership potential and effective management skills, especially in the context of leading research team
  • Commitment to adopting principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Able to start work by June 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
