About the Role

The purpose of this position is to lead the design, assessment, and implementation of measurement systems for experimental facilities under the responsibility of the Centre for Propulsion and Thermal Power Engineering. Special focus lies into the selection of electrical components, signal conditioning, data acquisition and processing of key variables for the operation and control of state-of-the-art test rigs. Centre’s rigs are high pressure, high temperature industrial oriented, including turbomachinery operating at high rotational speeds. The role involves defining the set up and leading the execution of experimental tests campaigns. You will also be expected to assist with the general programme of work that is conducted in the Centre and engage strongly with the Rolls-Royce UTC in Cranfield.

About You

You will be educated in a closely relevant engineering discipline, either with relevant industrial experience or experimental rig design and testing background. Experience in control and instrumentation will be useful. Position is aimed to develop a track record of publishing in high quality journals. This position also requires;  

  • Knowledge of measurement systems with electrical signals and data acquisition techniques
  • Knowledge of signal conditioning, discrete sampling and analysis of time-varying signals
  • Advanced understanding of safety procedures, production of risk assessments and HSE policies
  • Practical experience in sketching mechanical, process and electrical drawings.
  • Experience in planning, building and operating experimental rigs for technologies such as: turbomachines, wind tunnels or automotive engines

The Centre for Propulsion & Thermal Power Engineering, within SATM at Cranfield University, has a strong track record in power plant modelling and propulsion system performance simulation and experimental research. Research activities in the past 50 years cover virtually every aspect of the field including propulsion system integration and computational and experimental propulsion aerodynamics.
