ABOUT XJTLU 

In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace. XJTLU now has over 25,000 enrolled students in both Suzhou and Liverpool in the UK, with plans to grow to about 28,000 students by 2025. There are currently about 2,000 staff, among which about 1,000 academic staff, with an almost even split between citizens of the People’s Republic of China and international passport holders. XJTLU offers our undergraduates and postgraduates over 100 programmes with a diverse spectrum of courses.

XJTLU is entering a new and exciting phase of its development as part of its strategic priorities for the next ten years. Adopting a new higher education model based on the concept of Syntegrative Education (SE), XJTLU is currently opening a new Entrepreneurial Education site in Taicang, part of wider Suzhou, where the Entrepreneur College (Taicang) is located. The Taicang site will be a pioneer of, and educational model for, the future campus in addressing challenges arising from the 4th Industrial Revolution. Other new initiatives include new working partnerships with Xi’an Jiaotong University, the continued development of the four new Academies, and exploration of further potential locations to develop the SE model.

With a focus on innovative learning and teaching, and research, XJTLU draws on the strengths of its parent universities, and plays a pivotal role in facilitating access to China for UK and other institutional partners. At same time, XJTLU is exploring future education by blending the educational theory, best practice and culture from west and east.

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SCHOOL SUZHOU (IBSS) 

International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is growing in size and influence in pursuit of its vision to be a leading international business school. The school is based on strong principles of internationalism, innovation, inspiration and integrity, which together ensure that we have a positive impact on society through our teaching, research and business engagement. In that pursuit, IBSS became the youngest business school to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in 2016, and again, the youngest School to receive EQUIS accreditation in 2018. Receiving joint accreditation of AMBA and BGA in 2020, IBSS became the world’s 103rd triple accredited business school.

The five departments of IBSS are Accounting, Economics, Finance, Intelligent Operations and Marketing, and Strategic Management and Organizations with over 170 faculty members and more than 6,000 students from over 60 different countries. IBSS delivers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, PhD and Executive Education programmes across all major business disciplines.

ROLE OVERVIEW 

This is an administrative appointment for a full-time business faculty member. In addition to teaching and research/practice requirements, the IBSS Associate Dean for Professional Engagement leads the highly productive teams of Business Engagement and Executive Education as well as Corporate Recruiting in an effort to meet the business school’s corporate engagement objectives regionally and abroad. As a member of the IBSS senior management team (BSMT), the ADPE will contribute to the development of strategic plans and operational procedures of the business school. 

This administrative position is officially recognized by the university with a monthly duty allowance. The initial 3-year appointment is renewable for one additional 3-year term. 

DUTIES 

  • Create an effective network of relationships with the corporate world and government agencies in pursuit of the business school’s objectives in business engagement and executive education,
  • Advocate within the business school and the university the importance of business engagement,
  • Oversee the business school’s efforts to develop and launch corporate projects and educational initiatives for external stakeholders,
  • Guide the development of the business school’s increasing business engagement activities,
  • Support development activities of the business school’s research centers through business engagement,
  • Encourage faculty participation in business engagement and executive education,
  • Liaise with other BSMT members in support of the school’s internationalization objectives,
  • Develop and maintain a close network of IBSS alumni and organize a range of regular networking events,
  • Contribute to the development of the business school’s strategic objectives as a member of its leadership team (BSMT),
  • Liaise with other organizational and academic units of the university on matters related to business engagement and executive education,
  • Guide the corporate recruiting activities designed to increase to number of part-time PG students,
  • Liaise with the AD for Academic Engagement on securing external research grants, and
  • Engage in fundraising activities with external stake holders in liaison with the Dean. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Leadership and Innovation

  • To lead in the development and implementation of the school’s business engagement and executive education strategy in collaboration with the BSMT,
  • To chair the External Outreach Committee,
  • To work with academics and the Associate Dean for Research in support of the dissemination of research to impact the business community and greater society,
  • To lead the development and implementation of the IBSS alumni strategy, including the delivery of appropriate services and training to establish IBSS as the premier educational partner for lifelong learning,
  • To oversee and actively participate in regular communication with government and industry partners to establish mutually beneficial working relationships between the business school and the external entities,
  • To help academic departments engage with appropriate networks and professional and accreditation bodies (e.g. AGCAS, AGR, AMBA, EFMD, ABS, AACSB),
  • To be responsible and accountable for the professional engagement team’s budget, which includes project budget proposals, annual revenue estimates, and the record keeping of all cash flows as a result of executive education and consulting activities, and
  • To build strong networks across the university with other academic clusters and business engagement units.

2. Marketing, Recruitment and Retention

  • To be responsible for the strategic positioning of the business school with respect to industry impact,
  • To take the strategic lead in managing external relationships at all levels,
  • To benchmark the corporate engagement services and monitor the competition to share best practice and identify new opportunities,
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of the business school’s marketing strategy,
  • To actively market the IBSS part-time PG programs to suitable working professionals, and
  • To gauge the IBSS professional service quality and impact through customer feedback and key performance indicators following the IBSS Strategic Plan.

3. Customer Experience

  • To support the business engagement team to effectively manage customer relationships and enhance the customer experience,
  • To oversee and guide the communication with external customers to understand their educational needs and service preferences in an effort to optimize the IBSS professional program portfolio, and
  • To oversee the delivery and service quality of all professional programs. 

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate for the role of Associate Dean for Professional Engagement is expected to hold the rank of Full Professor or Senior Associate Professor, and to possess the following essential and desirable qualifications/experience: 

Qualification

  • PhD degree or equivalent in a field of business, and
  • Postgraduate Certificate of Academic Practice or equivalent higher education teaching qualification.
  • Industry experience is a plus. 

Background & Experience

  • A record of academic achievements and focus on business engagement and executive education,
  • A proven track record of academic management, including the line management and leadership of academic colleagues,
  • A record of successful interaction with internal and external stakeholders, including corporate partners and professional organizations, such as Chamber of Commerce, as well as government entities,  
  • A strong customer service ethos, ability and achievement in a services planning, coordination and delivery role, in driving team performance and implementing customer service measures.
  • Extensive project development experience in an academic environment,
  • Experience of monitoring and reviewing measures of project success for enterprise and innovation,
  • Experience of developing and sustaining academic and professional partnerships regionally and internationally,
  • Awareness of recent trends and issues in higher education regulation and a record of successful navigation in rapidly changing environments,
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build and maintain effective and productive working relationships internally and externally,
  • Experience with academic development and accreditation, and
  • A thorough understanding of national industrial strategy, intellectual property and the commercialization of research.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

The Associate Dean of Professional Engagement receives an administrative duty allowance.

The university provides every new faculty member with a Research Development Fund to initiate research projects and a Research Engagement Fund to support their continuous research activities. School level research funding is also available as are various external corporate and government research grants.

CITIZENSHIP AND VISA REGULATIONS 

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government.
