Full time starting salary is normally in the range of £37,337 to £41,406 per annum with potential progression up to £51,298 per annum (37 hours per week)

About the Role

We are seeking a full-time Research Fellow in Structural Analysis and Optimisation to join the Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre at the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing. This post is funded as part of a large funded project involving other UK Universities and major Aerospace manufacturers. 

You will join a team at Cranfield working on the implementation of advanced numerical simulation to develop new shapes for weight savings of landing gear products. The simulation work is aimed at challenging existing classical design methods, that are too conservative, to leverage the full capability of innovative materials and processes. The tasks led by Cranfield University in this project, will be concentrated predominantly on FE techniques and methods to derive failure criteria applicable to multiaxial loading. 

Your work will involve the identification of the most suitable models to predict component failure and develop numerical models to predict failure in coupons (test samples) made of different materials with different manufacturing processes. The simulation work also involve validation for which you will need to design the experimental setup (including sensors and acquisition system) and perform the tests. 

The failure criteria developed for different material and processes will be used to predict failure in representative structures under single loading conditions as well as combined loading conditions.

About You 

You will be educated to doctoral level (or very close to completion of your PhD) in a relevant subject and have experience in the implementation of advanced finite element simulation of homogenous and heterogenous materials processed with conventional and additive manufacturing approach. You are passionate about fatigue and fracture mechanics and an experienced user of Abaqus and the implementation of innovative simulation approaches to predict failure under complex stress.
