We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as Senior Robotics Technician. In this varied role, you will operate with a high degree of autonomy to manage the day-to-day facilities and provide technical support within Sheffield Robotics. We operate several facilities including for general robotics research, fabrication/repair, human-robot interaction studies, and motion capture. These include a range of novel robotic and supporting technologies, used for a broad range of research activities, with which you will be expected to become familiar.

You will have a high level of technical knowledge to provide a comprehensive and enthusiastic technical service, for staff and students across the University, and to external parties. You will have extensive practical experience of mechanical, electrical and electronic techniques and their implementation in electro-mechanical systems, through design, construction, modification and repair.

Specifically, you will:

  • be expected to develop extensive knowledge and experience of the varied robot platforms in use in Sheffield Robotics
  • manage the day-to-day operation of, and provide support for, the core robotics facilities in Sheffield Robotics (including the Robot Foundry, robotics workshop, Human-Robot Interaction laboratory, and the motion capture laboratory
  • become familiar with the operation of the facilities and equipment and be responsible for ensuring that all the equipment is well maintained and calibrated and that repairs are undertaken in a timely manner
  • be familiar with acting as a source of technical authority and you will provide detailed advice and guidance to customers on a broad range of technical issues, ensuring a high level of customer service
  • provide training and demonstrations on the operation of technical and robotic equipment and safe working practices, ensuring appropriate records are maintained
  • identify, specify, and procure new equipment to enable future research and technical support
  • contribute to the departmental health and safety committee
  • adopt high working standards, ensuring we continue to be recognised for our service excellence and exemplary Health and Safety record. This will include maintaining a detailed awareness and full commitment to the relevant regulations, and providing timely safety information and updates carrying out and documenting risk assessments. 
  • act as a role model to junior colleagues, providing coaching and guidance as appropriate.
