Overview

The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University invites applications for a doctoral studentship on climate justice and youth in Northeast England. The candidate will be supervised by Dr Catherine Walker, Professor Anoop Nayak and Dr Clifton Evers and will join a vibrant research community with internationally recognised expertise in youth geographies, cultural geographies and creative, community-engaged research.

‘Climate justice’ as a term has been employed by multiple actors, from UN bodies to environmental activists to academic theorists (McGregor and Christie, 2021; Schlosberg and Collins, 2004). Whilst the term has multiple meanings, its core values lie in illuminating the unequal causes and effects of climate change, and allowing individuals to envision courses of action to address these underlying inequalities (Mikulewicz et al., 2023).

Generational justice is an important aspect of climate justice that intersects with other social inequalities. As the embodiment of the future, young people are frequently evoked in environmental debates (Kraftl et al., 2022; Walker, 2017), and sustained youth activism underscores young people’s more-than-symbolic roles in enacting climate justice. Whilst attention focuses on ‘exceptional’ and ‘heroic’ activists (Taft, 2020), more exploration of how diverse young people understand and enact climate justice in local contexts is needed.

This lays the context for further investigation into the geographies of climate justice for youth in Northeast England. As young people grow up with the promise of ‘green’ innovations alongside the legacy of (now marginal) carbon-intensive industries, the region offers manifold opportunities for unpacking the contradictions of climate justice from a youth perspective.

In this context potential themes might be:

  • Bottom-up approaches to theorising climate justice
  • Climate justice in post-industrial communities
  • Intergenerational tensions around climate justice
  • Climate justice in intersection with racial, economic, generational and/or gender justice
  • (Co)-creative methods for researching climate justice
  • The role of community arts in engaging youth-led climate justice
  • The spatially uneven effects of climate policies on youth
  • Youth climate activism in the Northeast
