This is a blue-sky PhD project that seeks to define a novel landscape of photonics by investigating the interplay between nonlinear dynamics and topological protection in nano- and micro-structured systems, particularly at terahertz (THz) frequencies. By exploiting materials that enable nonlinear mechanisms, especially in reduced dimensionality systems like quasi-2D materials, the research will delve into the conceptualisation, fabrication and study of topologically insulated waveguide devices, with cross-pollination with other research areas such as quantum technology, complex systems and condensed matter physics.

This PhD project at Loughborough University is set to pioneer the exploration of nonlinear dynamics and topological protection within the realm of terahertz nano- and micro-structured systems. This scientific endeavour will translate the large background of the Emergent Photonics Research Centre in quasi-2D nonlinear materials into the domain of the topologically protected physical system, with ramifications beyond the specific domain with glimpses into the future of quantum information processing and photonic computing.

Topological photonics allows the transport of light to be immune to disorder, without losses. Merging these topological photonic structures with nonlinearity will enable physical mechanisms inaccessible in other domains and novel technological platforms for lasers, unidirectional light isolators, accessing to exotic observable soliton states and classical and quantum light processing.

Terahertz technology is an emerging area with vast economic and societal ramifications. However, this research is not just about this specific domain but stretches beyond exploring the more general challenge of nonlinear topological photonics using vast specific methodologies and technologies enabled in the THz research domain.

The project is hosted on the fertile grounds of the Emergent Photonics Research Centre at the Dept. of Physics of Loughborough University. A new PhD research will be bolstered by a recent investment exceeding £2 million and a vibrant research portfolio valued at around £6 million. This centre of excellence, sprawling over 500 square meters, is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment like ultrafast high-energy lasers, optical combs, and avant-garde THz diagnostics - some unique and realised for the centre scopes.

This PhD project will move beyond the academic pursuit, with a potential output rich in new intellectual properties and a novel background with a wide horizontal interest. In addition, the candidate will develop background and skills which include, among others, an intimate understanding of ultrafast and topological photonics, team and resource management, grant writing, scientific networking and communication.
