The University of Exeter’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is inviting applications for a PhD studentship fully-funded by Andrew Fenwick (Economics & Agricultural Economics 1981) to commence on 23 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.  For eligible students the studentship will cover Home or International tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £18,622 (23/24 rate) for 4 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study.

Project Description:

Background: Cornwall Council and local stakeholders have pioneered new models of nature positive development. The county was the first to agree an Environmental Growth Strategy (in 2016) that has had a significant impact on local planning (exemplified by the Cornwall Plan, 2020-50), it has supported funding applications for the Forest for Cornwall and a Nature Recovery pilot, helped to attract the G7 summit (2021) with follow up funding for the G7 legacy project to support nature recovery and is evident in new business development. The University of Exeter have been key partners supporting in this work, exploring opportunities to embed research in ongoing activity.

This proposal is designed to embed research in the ongoing work to support tree planting and forestry in Cornwall. The Forest for Cornwall project aims to “support the people of Cornwall to take action to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies by helping to create a new treescape through the establishment of 8,000 hectares of new trees and woodland across Cornwall by 2030.” It is a project designed to engage the public in planting trees across a range of locations including urban parks, gardens and hedgerows. Newly secured funding from Defra’s Nature for Climate scheme will support a Woodland Creation Partnership to focus on realising significant opportunities to develop new woodlands, richer hedgerows and agroforestry projects.

This project is focused on delivering novel research to improve understanding of how to maximise the role of trees and woodland in recovering biodiversity while also providing nature-based solutions to climate change that sequester carbon, improve flood resilience, enhance connectivity, and support population well-being. The project is co-designed and supervised by the academic team and council staff.

International applicants need to be aware that you will have to cover the cost of your student visa, healthcare surcharge and other costs of moving to the UK to do a PhD.
