Applications are open for UK candidates to apply for a 4-year full funded PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham funded by the EPSRC Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) in Advanced Medical Imaging. This DTP is a collaboration between Nottingham and the University of Queensland, Australia, both world leaders in precision medical imaging. Research placements of up to six months at Queensland are an integral part of the PhD.

This studentship, with Nottingham’s flagship Additive Manufacturing (CfAM) and Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centres, will deliver significant improvements in medical imaging/ treatment by the synthesis and use of novel materials that will allow the co‑application of multiple biomedical imaging modalities, e.g., MRI and Ultrasound. Enabling multiple methods of imaging to be applied will greatly improve the level and accuracy of information gained from the imaging process. There will be scope for applicants to develop project themes across a broad range of clinical targets (oncology, neuroscience, renal, cardiovascular etc), via the synthesis of new contrast agents, development of novel methods of their delivery and the use nanosized diamonds as quantum sensors and to enhance image contrast.

This project will also incorporate medical imaging with 3D printing (3DP) to develop novel cleaner, greener and more personalised therapeutic solutions by producing imageable 3D printed devices. The CfAM uses state of the art 3DP technologies, e.g., stereolithography, projection stereolithography and two photon polymerisations to create new, complex designs suitable for highly optimised medical devices.

The student will join a cohort of four doctoral students will work across both institutes on thematically linked PhD projects, spanning all areas of imaging science, from synthetic chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, biology, 3D-printing and quantum technologies.

Funding: The PhD project will be funded for the full four years of the studentship and will include transferable skills training, full tuition fees and a Research Training Support Grant.

Eligibility: The studentship is available for UK applicants, who have or expect to obtain, a First or 2:1 in a relevant discipline. EU applicants who can confirm residency in the UK for at least three years before October 2024, you may also be eligible for a full award.
