PhD Studentship: Decentralised and Distributed Active Noise and Vibration Control

University of Southampton

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Southampton
Funding for: UK Students
Funding amount: £18,622 tax-free per annum

Closes: 31st August 2024

Supervisory Team: Dr Jordan Cheer

Project description

A fully funded industrial studentship is available for a high-quality student to work in the area of decentralised and distributed active noise and vibration control. Although active noise and vibration control is now a relatively mature technology, with commercial systems in headphones, cars and aircrafts, it is not straightforward to apply to large-scale applications with widely distributed control sources and error sensors. The successful applicant to this position will investigate the limits on active noise and vibration control systems adopting decentralised and distributed control architectures. These strategies reduce the number of connections and potentially the amount of data that must be communicated between different elements of the controller and are thus well suited to large-scale applications. The project will be carried out using a range of numerical and experimental techniques and it is expected that the successful applicant will have experience and/or interest in acoustics, vibration, control and signal processing. The specific focus of the research is likely to depend on the skills of the successful candidate, but will certainly benefit from the extensive experimental facilities available at the ISVR.

This is an extremely exciting opportunity to work as a part of a team on the development of intelligent systems for low noise environments, which is being supported by the multi-million pound EPSRC Prosperity Partnership with BAE Systems, Lloyds Register and the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Additive Manufacturing.

This project is supported by a large industrial collaborator, which provides a wide range of potential opportunities for the successful candidate. In particular, the strong industrial connection helps to ensure that the research will have a direct impact on real-world engineering.

This position also benefits from a tax-free stipend, which may be enhanced from the standard studentship depending on the successful candidate’s previous experience. This includes the standard EPSRC studentship of £18,662 and further significant top-up from the industrial partner depending on experience.

The successful candidate will be based in the Signal Processing, Audio and Hearing Group of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. This is home to an internationally renowned research group working in diverse areas of signal processing and control.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Jordan Cheer, Signal Processing, Audio and Hearing Research Group, Email: j.cheer@soton.ac.uk
