NIHR has funded Special Needs Care Ltd (SNC), a medium size provider of supported living services for people with intellectual disabilities in Chester, University College London, and Cardiff University to develop proposals for a definitive trial of a digital product called PBAS in adult supported living services.

Evaluating the Positive Behaviour and Active Support (PBAS) app

PBAS is a digital technology that translates an evidence-based intervention (called Active Support) into an app for use in supported living services for adults with intellectual disability. To inform proposals for a definitive trial, we need to:

  1. Confirm what people using services think is important to measure and how.
  2. Evaluate whether service providers in England and Wales are interested in using an app.
  3. Assess provider willingness to participate in a study.
  4. Describe what service providers currently do about activity planning and monitoring.

The successful applicant will work as part of team. Your main role will be to organise and run focus groups with adults with a learning disability and staff in supported living, as well as a small number of 1:1 interviews with people with intellectual disability. Focus groups and interviews will focus on what aspects of living (in supported accommodation) are important for those living and working in them. You will analyse findings with a view to informing the design of a future RCT and economic evaluation. Some travel in England or Wales will be required for face-to-face data collection. Hybrid working is possible.

About you

We are interested to hear from applicants with:

  • A strong (upper 2:1) first degree in Psychology, Social Care, or a related discipline.
  • Experience of qualitative and/or quantitative research in intellectual disability/neurodevelopmental conditions or experience of doing research with social care service providers.
  • Experience of running focus groups and conducting interviews with people using services and service providers.
