The School of Mathematics and Statistics is looking to recruit two lecturers as part of an ongoing expansion of our academic staff.

We are looking for scholars with outstanding potential and hence we are advertising flexibly across two roles, Lecturer in Statistics (Education Focused) or Lecturer in Statistics (Education and Research).

*Applications from candidates who wish to apply for Associate Lecturer (Education Focused) at Grade 6 (salary: £37,099 - £44,263 per annum) may also be considered, and if appointed the job description would be adapted accordingly.

Successful candidates for the Education and Research role will have a strong and growing international research reputation and commitment to delivering high quality teaching. We welcome applications from across the broad spectrum of statistics, and particularly from candidates whose research could link with existing research strengths in St Andrews, including ecological and environmental statistics, medical statistics, and statistical ‘omics’. We are especially keen to appoint candidates with strength in statistical methodology.

Successful candidates for the Education Focused role will be inspirational teachers in statistics committed to delivering and enhancing our highly-rated programme of teaching at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level and will have experience in curriculum development.

We welcome applications from candidates who hold a PhD in statistics or a closely related discipline. Candidates should have teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level, have experience applying relevant analytical skills and teaching techniques to a wide range of learners, have good communication and teamwork skills, and share our desire to educate and inform students.

We are fully committed to equality and diversity in our recruitment and employment policies. We operate family-friendly hours for core meetings and are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements for staff.

Employees of the University have access to a wide range of staff benefits including:

  • Annual leave of 34 days, plus 5 public holidays
  • Financial contribution to relocation
  • Membership of the USS Pension Scheme with generous employer contributions
  • A hybrid working environment, including partial homeworking where appropriate and a range of family friendly policies

For informal enquiries, contact the Head of School, Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (mathshos@st-andrews.ac.uk) or the co-Head of the Statistics Division, Professor Len Thomas (len.thomas@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Applications are particularly welcome from people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in academic posts at the University.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience.  We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter and Race Charters). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.  Full details available online: https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/

In accordance with the new immigration rules, it is with regret that applying for this role on a part-time basis does not meet the current suitability requirements set by the UKVI to enable sponsorship of migrant workers.

Closing Date: 4 March 2024                                          Interview Date: 2 April 2024
