Elevate your research with a PhD studentship focused on advancing ventilation strategies to improve both indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy efficiency of our buildings. The heating, cooling and ventilation of buildings constitute a significant fraction of global energy consumption. In the UK, residential buildings account for one-third of total energy consumption, two-thirds of which is dedicated to heating alone. As we strive for energy-efficient solutions to combat emissions and rising energy costs, it is crucial to concurrently address the impact that these solutions can have on indoor air quality. Ventilation is essential to remove contaminants that are detrimental to indoor air quality, which can include pollution, but also airborne virus particles (as became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic).

Project focus

This project aims to pioneer novel ventilation strategies that strike a balance between the health and well-being of occupants, and the imperative for high energy efficiency. The successful candidate will leverage experimental flow visualisation techniques to develop an understanding of indoor airflows and the role they play in transporting pollution, virus particles, and heat within indoor environments. The insights gained from these experiments will drive the development of advanced ventilation systems and theoretical models. The project also offers flexibility for customization to the candidate’s interests, providing opportunities to develop numerical simulations (CFD).

Skills development

As part of this dynamic research study, the successful candidate will acquire invaluable and transferable skills in scientific computing, experimental design, and modelling. Interaction with leading experts in the field will foster a collaborative and enriching environment for personal and professional growth.

Applicant requirements

We are seeking candidates driven by a passion for pioneering scientific research to address real-world challenges. A strong background in fluid mechanics is essential, coupled with coding proficiency (e.g. in Matlab, Python, or equivalent languages). Desirable qualifications include experience or strong knowledge of optical methods for flow measurement (e.g. PIV).

Additional Funding Information

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.

The studentship is for 3 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £18,622 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.
