Professor in Chinese Economic History

The University of Hong Kong - Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences

Applications are invited for appointment as Professor in Chinese Economic History at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (Ref.: 524493), with the possibility of joint appointment with HKU Business School. The successful candidate will take a fixed-term appointment on July 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter, with potential renewal. A well-accomplished candidate may be considered for appointment as a tenured full professor, subject to the university’s approval.

Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, established in 2001 at The University of Hong Kong, has a mission to promote innovative, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on China. The Institute seeks to provide a vibrant hub for studying the multi-facets of the Chinese civilization and its long developmental history using both new and traditional approaches. Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences invites academics in Chinese Economic History and/or related fields to join the Quantitative History Research Cluster of the Institute as a full professor. Candidates should have an impactful research record with publications in leading academic journals and/or with leading publishers, as well as demonstrated evidence of international standing in this field. Proven academic leadership is preferred.

The appointee is expected to maintain an active research programme, and be responsible for teaching courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels, supervising research students, and contributing to the administration of academic programmes and the research cluster.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, HK salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
