Background

The Department of Mathematics includes 19 permanent staff. We are engaged in research across pure and applied mathematics and mathematical physics. In the last Research Excellence Framework, 97% of Mathematics outputs were rated as either world-leading or internationally excellent and Mathematics ranked 11th in the UK for research impact. The Department runs four BSc undergraduate programmes in Mathematics, Mathematics with Data Science, Mathematics and Finance, and Mathematics with Finance and Economics as well as an MSci in Mathematics and in Mathematics with Data Science, and a Foundation Year programme.

Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be expected to:

Take an active part in the Department’s research activities, including publication of articles, conference attendance and building appropriate links with external partners;

Secure research funding from the Research Councils, industry and other sources and, if appropriate, to generate impact beyond academia;

Carry out teaching in the Department and the School, in particular on the Mathematics with Data Science programmes, including supervising student projects and supervising research students;

To take on appropriate managerial and administrative responsibilities.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level a publication and grant capture record commensurate with the more senior role level is expected.

Person Specification

The successful candidates will have:

A breadth and depth of knowledge in areas of Mathematics and its applications, and related topics commensurate with raising the profile of the activities in this field across the School.

An international reputation in research in mathematics, preferably with connections to data science, which connects with research in the Department.

A corresponding record of peer-reviewed publications likely to be rated at 3* or above in the forthcoming Research Excellent Framework.

Ability to deliver student learning in mathematics with data science, including project design and supervision.

Evidence of research design and development to achieve significant impact / potential impact.

Evidence of developing links with other researchers or industrial collaborators.

Experience of writing successful research proposals – attracting funding from research councils, industry and other external bodies.

Experience in enabling and delivering student learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
