Full time starting salary is normally in the range £45,585 to £54,395 with potential progression once in post to £61,198.

Applications are invited from early career researchers of diverse backgrounds for an open-ended faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in the Institute of Cancer and Genomics Sciences and within a new interdisciplinary Centre for Environmental Research and Justice (CERJ) at the University of Birmingham (UK).

The research focus in this position will be into cellular and tissue origins of organismal responses to environmental stress using systems biology methodologies, such as single cell and spatial genomics. Candidates who are investigating environmental factors on gene functions using model species (e.g., zebrafish embryos, Drosophila) are encouraged to apply. Experience in applied statistics, network modelling and data science would be an asset, but other analytical approaches are also welcome. Having previous experience in mechanistic toxicology adds value to this open faculty post.

Person Spec

  • A PhD degree (or close to completion) in a relevant field, with considerable research experience using semantic approaches to gain insights into biomedical data.
  • Demonstrated experience in genetics, genomics or functional genomics associated with environmental health or (eco) toxicology.
  • Post holder may have expertise or collaborate to make use of existing expertise in high content screening/phenotyping using model species such as Danio rerio.
  • Demonstrated excellence in at least Research, with competence in Learning and Teaching, and in Management and Administration.

Teaching

  • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes at UG or PG level.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues.
  • Experience and success in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability.

Research

  • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation, significant research outputs (demonstrated in for example as first and /or last author peer reviewed publications or equivalent research outputs).
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results.
  • Extensive experience of applying and/or developing and devising successful models, techniques and methods.

Management Administration

  • Ability to contribute to Centre/Institute management processes.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
