About the Role

Nottingham Trent University is The Times and The Sunday Times Modern University of the Year 2023 and the What Uni Student Choice Awards University of the Year 2023. NTU’s strategy – University, reimagined – demonstrates our commitment to doing the right thing for our people, our communities, and our environment. The School of Social Sciences is home to over 7000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 650 staff.

We are seeking to recruit a forward-thinking and ambitious academic leader as Head of Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. This is an ideal opportunity to build on the Department’s success by further developing our undergraduate and postgraduate courses, to support our national and international research activities and profile, and to increase our knowledge exchange and commercial activities.  You will have a well-developed understanding of the UK Higher Education and Criminal Justice sectors and a proven track record of delivery to ensure our future success. You will also have a commitment to support the inclusive culture and the career development of the team, a commitment to innovative delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and a track record of income generation. Your personal research, knowledge exchange, scholarship or practice should be in a relevant area of criminal justice and may be at a professorial level. You will also contribute to the leadership of the overall School as a member of the School Executive Team.

For more details, please take a look at the role profile. We'll still consider applications even if you don't meet every single one of the requirements, so don't be put off if you don't match them perfectly.

About Us

The School of Social Sciences has six Departments including NTU Psychology, the Institute of Health and Allied Professions, the Nottingham Institute of Education, Social and Political Sciences, Social Work, Care and Community, and Criminology and Criminal Justice. We have an interdisciplinary culture and foster an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative working environment, so that staff and students from all backgrounds are enabled to succeed. The School is primarily based on the Clifton and City campuses with growing provision at the University Centre, Mansfield.

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice was established in 2020 following a reorganisation of Departments within the School. Our work is supported by strong links and partnerships with Nottinghamshire police, professional forensic experts, local prisons, and former criminal justice practitioners. The Department is home to about 900 students studying policing, criminology, criminal justice, and international law enforcement.  Our research is supported by three active and productive research groups; Hate Crime, Critical Criminology and Social Justice, and Quantitative and Spatial Criminology.
