The role

The School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies (SPAIS) is seeking to appoint 2 outstanding early career academics to the posts of Lecturer in Politics and/or International Relations. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in US or British politics, but we welcome strong applicants working in Politics and International Relations, broadly defined, who can demonstrate how they would link with areas of research strength in SPAIS.

The successful candidates will join a research-intensive School with well-established research centres and groups and teaching programmes in Politics and International Relations, including in US and British politics, to which they will be expected to contribute.

SPAIS is a highly collegial, interdisciplinary School that is committed ethically and intellectually to theoretical and methodological pluralism and to promoting diverse approaches to the study of Sociology, Politics and International Relations, including from decolonial, global South and feminist perspectives. The School has strong commitments to, and track record in, co-produced and participatory research and civic engagement and to collaborative, interdisciplinary ways of working. We are keen to attract talented individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds to join us in these endeavours. What will you be doing?

  • Conduct original research that contributes to the discipline of Politics and/or International Relations.
  • Publish high quality research outputs and develop a publications plan, with a clear strategy for developing a strong personal REF outputs profile for their career stage.
  • Actively pursue opportunities for externally-funded research grants to further their own and SPAIS’s research profile.
  • Join and contribute to one of our existing research centres or groups.
  • Contribute to SPAIS’s teaching provision in Politics/International Relations;
  • Provide supervision and personal tutoring to undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Undertake administrative roles within SPAIS;
  • Play an active part in School governance.

You should apply if

  • A PhD in an area related to Politics or International Relations.
  • A track record of high-quality research and publications in Politics/International Relations.
  • Demonstrable potential to successfully engage in research grant-capture to pursue an ambitious research agenda.
  • Ability to provide engaging, research-led teaching to small and large groups across undergraduate and postgraduate units in Politics and International Relations.
