Background

The selected candidate will join a ground-breaking research initiative aimed at revolutionizing the field of fluorescence microscopy. Our project is at the forefront of integrating novel single-photon imaging techniques into wide-field microscopes, a development poised to enhance the visualization and analysis of protein organization and behaviour in cells with unprecedented nanometre resolution. This role involves contributing to the advancement of molecular scale imaging, particularly focusing on innovative methodologies like fluorescence lifetime-multiplexed single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM), single-pair Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (spFRET), and super-resolution optical fluctuation imaging (SOFI). The successful applicant will play a crucial role in developing and implementing these techniques, enabling comprehensive and simultaneous imaging within a single experimental setup, thus overcoming the limitations of current microscopy methods.

Role Summary

  • Participate actively in specified research grants and projects related to advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques.
  • Contribute to the writing of grant proposals and funding applications to secure resources for ongoing and future research.
  • Operate within the specialism of single-photon imaging, fluorescence lifetime-multiplexed SMLM, spFRET, and SOFI.
  • Analyse, interpret, and present research findings and results in a clear and concise manner, contributing to the field's body of knowledge.
  • Play a key role in generating funding through grant applications, collaborations, and partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Engage in the development of licensing agreements or spin-out deals, leveraging research outcomes for commercial success and public benefit.
  • Contribute to the public understanding and visibility of the discipline through publications, presentations, and outreach activities.

Main Duties

  • Develop research objectives and proposals within the scope of advanced fluorescence microscopy, both independently and collaboratively, with mentorship as needed.
  • Actively contribute to writing and submitting bids for research funding to support the project's objectives.
  • Perform detailed analysis and interpretation of data collected through various research methods, including scientific experimentation and literature reviews.
  • Apply specialized knowledge in single-photon imaging and related techniques to develop new intellectual understandings in the field.
  • Disseminate research findings through publications, seminars, and other relevant platforms to share advancements with the scientific community.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to students engaged in research work, and mentor PhD students in areas relevant to the project.
  • Contribute to the development of new models, techniques, and methods in fluorescence microscopy and single-photon imaging.

Person Specification

  • A PhD in Optics, Physics, Biophysics, or a related field.
  • Proven technical skills in optics and optical microscopy.
  • Strong scripting and coding abilities (Python, MATLAB, etc.) for microscope automation and data analysis.
  • An interest or background in biophysics or cell biology.
  • A team-oriented mindset, with excellent communication skills and a passion for collaborative research.
