This is an exciting opportunity in a vibrant, research-intensive Higher Education Institution, over two large main campuses and several other smaller sites. Reporting to the Director of University Safety & Resilience (USR), the post covers the two statutory appointed competent persons’ roles of Radiation Protection Adviser and Radioactive Waste Adviser, and encompasses the University’s use of both ionising and non-ionising radiations.

You will lead a small team of professional and technical radiation safety staff, with administrative support. The scope of the role is broad and diverse, covering the radiation safety and environmental protection aspects of all University teaching, research, professional and clinical activities, including our busy Small Animal Hospital and Weipers Equine Centre, in collaboration with a network of local Radiation Protection Supervisors.

Furthermore, you will lead in the development of policy, guidance, training and monitoring activities in relation to radiation safety and radiation environmental protection. The RPA/ RWA will also work closely with our Estates teams to support the safe commissioning, maintenance and de-commissioning of facilities. Key partners will be the Safety and Environmental Protection Service, also within USR, and the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service.

In this role, you will manage the Radiation Protection Service providing advice and specialist services to the University community in the areas of Ionising Radiation, Non-Ionising Radiation and Radioactive Waste management ensuring compliance with current legislation, including the Ionising Radiations Regulation 2017, the Environmental Authorisation (Scotland) Regulations 2018 and the Nuclear Safeguards (EU exit) Regulations 2019.
