University Assistant/Associate Professor in Climate and Environmental Fluid Dynamics

University of Cambridge - Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £45,585 to £57,696 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 5th February 2024
Closes: 31st March 2024
Job Ref: LE40014

Applications are invited for an Assistant/Associate Professorship in Climate and Environmental Fluid Dynamics, jointly held in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Department of Earth Sciences (DES) to commence on 1 September 2024 or shortly thereafter.

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent and be able to demonstrate an outstanding research track record within the broad area of Climate and Environmental Science, for example in areas including but not limited to:

  •  Atmospheric dynamics
  •  Cloud microphysics
  •  Flooding
  •  Extreme weather
  •  Response and adaptation to climate change
  •  Groundwater transport and/or composition

Applications are particularly encouraged from those in climate and environmental fluid dynamics that significantly exploit the unique facilities of the GK Batchelor laboratory in DAMTP, and which complement and extend pre-existing strengths across Climate and Environmental Sciences at the University and the British Antarctic Survey.

It would be beneficial, though not essential, for applicants' work to be informed by, or combined with, the collection or interpretation of field data. An ability to teach in both the Mathematical Tripos and the Natural Sciences Tripos is essential. Experience in encouraging and supporting applicants and students from groups underrepresented in STEM subjects, including women will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be expected to give undergraduate and masters-level lectures, in particular contributing to the new MPhil in Quantitative Climate and Environmental Sciences.

The successful candidate will also take feedback from students and provide career or pastoral advice and perform other usual departmental duties such as those associated with examinations. They will be expected to investigate and lead new areas of research, seek out new funding opportunities and submit grant applications. They will also be required to write papers for publication, attend conferences, network with national/international colleagues and give presentations.

Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Assistant or Associate Professors. Appointment as an Assistant Professor will normally be for a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retiring age thereafter, subject to satisfactory performance.
