Tenure-Track Junior Professor of Econometrics

Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of econometrics.

Appointment requirements:

Governed by Section 102a of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerIHG).

Additional requirements for the appointment include:

  • A doctoral degree in Economics or a subject related to Economics
  • An excellent record of research activities in the field of applied econometrics, preferably with a focus in the field of empirical macroeconomics and/or data science with a focus on applications in the field of economics
  • The applicant’s research focus should complement current research areas in the department and within the Berlin University Alliance (submission of a research statement showing how they meet this criterion is required)
  • Experience with externally funded projects
  • Background of successful academic teaching at the university level
  • Ability to teach courses in English
  • Knowledge of German is preferred, but not required

Expectations:

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 BerlHG, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

  • Actively contribute to and further develop the curriculum for the bachelor’s and master’s programs in economics in the field of econometrics.
  • Actively contribute to doctoral-level training and education within the Berlin School of Economics.
  • Participate in externally funded research projects and joint research projects/initiatives.
  • Cover gender and diversity approaches relevant to econometrics in their research and teaching.
  • Acquire German language skills by the time of their tenure review so that they demonstrate at least C1 level (CEFR) proficiency.

Further information:

If the appointee successfully passes their tenure evaluation at the end of their junior professorship, they will be appointed to a permanent professorship through a streamlined procedure (i.e., the permanent appointment will not be advertised as a separate position). As part of this process, performance goals will be negotiated at the time the junior professor is hired. The fulfillment of those goals will be assessed as part of the tenure review (Section 102c BerlHG).

The performance goals will cover (but are not limited to) the following areas:

  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Promoting early-career researchers
  • Academic committee work
  • Leadership and management
  • Language proficiency

At the time of appointment to the permanent professorship, all general regulations and conditions regarding public sector employment must be fulfilled.

In addition, any candidates who completed their doctoral degree at Freie Universität Berlin and/or are employed at Freie Universität Berlin must comply with the regulations stipulated by Section 102c.3 BerlHG.

Applications should include a CV with information pursuant to Section 102a.1.4 BerlHG, copies of all certificates of academic qualification in German or English (please enclose translations where necessary), a list of publications, a list of courses previously taught, and evidence of teaching aptitude. Please include information on involvement in ongoing and future research endeavors, joint research projects, and externally funded projects. If necessary, please include language certificates. The application must also include a research statement. Two letters of reference from two researchers in the field should also be provided.
