The Department of Computer Science is a research-intensive department made up of over 90 academics delivering on-campus programmes to more than 800 students and online courses to over 1500 students. Our vision is to be internationally leading on education and research into engineering safe, ethical and secure computational systems.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate post to carry out research on model-based testing of robotic systems. The position is funded by the UKRI for up to 22 months in the context of the RoboStar centre. The project is joint between the School of Physics, Electronic, and Technology, and the Computer Science Department at York, the University of Sheffield, and a number of industrial partners. RoboStar is a centre with a presence in six countries. 

Role

The main duties and responsibilities of the Research Associate will be to work on the deployment testing aspect of the project that will lead the work on hardware-in-the-loop testing within the project, combined with software-in-the-loop testing. There will be a need to take tests developed through automated testing techniques that are based on formal models of robotic systems and integrate them into deployed robotic systems for hardware-in-the-loop testing. 

The Research Associate will also help develop novel test-generation and execution techniques, implement these approaches in the form of tools that use popular robotic simulators and robotic platforms, document the tools, and evaluate tools and approaches through experiments and case studies. They will liaise with academic and industrial partners and participate in the writing of papers.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have:

  • A first degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, or Mathematics
  • A PhD in formal methods or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge in robotics, testing, and software development to engage in high quality research
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research
  • Experience of writing up research work for publication
