Role Purpose and Information

We are recruiting a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the research group of Dr. Thomas Jones and Prof Ping Lin as part of the EPSRC pilot Prosperity Partnership award between the University of Dundee and the industrial partner Rautomead Ltd.

The role is to develop a thermo-fluidic based computational model around the manufacturing equipment (a super-cooler) used in the manufacture of alloys in large volume. The super-cooler comprises of a hollow copper sheath with 20 oC coolant liquid is pumped through. The pumped liquid extracts heat from the surrounding ceramic / liquid-metal region which can be up to 1700 oC. The current challenge is around understanding the heat extraction phenomena and so, the development of a computational model is required to investigate and optimize super-cooler re-designs for testing within an industrial setting at the project partner.

An appropriate finite element method (FEM) will then be designed and for the super-cooler optimization. The computational model for the liquid metal and its solidification process will be developed by the thermodynamically consistent phase-field modelling approach. You will contribute towards a new modelling and computational theoretical framework for a multiphase thermo-fluid and its solidification for a high impact real-world application.

Your skills

  • Essential: You will have a PhD (or will complete a PhD soon) in Applied and/or Computational Mathematics, or a closely allied discipline, with a strong background in modelling, numerical methods and/or simulation studies of fluid dynamics.
  • Essential: You will have the ability to conduct independent research, a developing track record of publications in international journals, excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to work within a team towards a common goal.
  • Essential: Programming skills with experience in Partial Differential Equation solving software platforms for Computational Fluid Dynamic with a focus on incompressible flow.
  • Desirable: expertise in phase-field modelling of multiphase fluids for the solidification process and Finite Modelling-based simulation studies.
  • Desirable: Experience in research collaboration with industrial partners or partners from different backgrounds.
