The School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton welcomes applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor in Magnetic Resonance. The successful candidate will strengthen our thriving research expertise and culture within the triple helix strategy of the University, which seeks to achieve cross-fertilisation between research, education and enterprise activity. The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and is one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities.

Magnetic Resonance is composed of groups from three faculties. Five PIs with multiple UK and international grants are in Chemistry, with others from Biological Sciences and Medicine, and a dedicated research engineer. We operate a large research facility with eight high-field NMR instruments, EPR and various low-field and benchtop systems. Instrumentation for solution and solid-state NMR includes specialist (sometimes world-unique) capabilities, often with significant home-built or customised components for small scale MRI and cryogenic, field-cycling, microfluidic, parahydrogen-enhanced, metabolomic, supercritical fluid, high temperature and high-pressure NMR.

About the role

We seek candidates with a strong, internationally recognised profile in a topical area within Magnetic Resonance. You will undertake internationally recognised research, and work to attract significant research funding. You will contribute to the School of Chemistry in a leadership, research, enterprise and educational capacity. Education contributions may be within our Chemistry or Chemical Engineering programmes.

About you

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Outstanding experience in shaping and leading a field of research.
  • A track record in raising significant external research funding.
  • Motivational leadership in research, education, and enterprise.
  • An ability to inspire students and colleagues.
  • Commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion.

What we can offer you

  • A collegiate research-led School that strongly values contributions in education and enterprise.
  • An outstanding research environment in Magnetic Resonance, with extensive expertise and a well-established research facility.
  • Access to sector-leading high performance computing facilities and a university commitment to maintain that sector-leading position.

The University of Southampton values diversity and equality, and we actively encourage applications from under-represented groups. We are delighted to be holders of the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award 2022, and hold both institutional and departmental Athena SWAN silver awards. We recognise that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.

Interviews will take place in person in Southampton. Southampton is well connected – just over an hour from central London and with an international airport, but with beautiful surroundings on the south coast and in the New Forest. Find out more about the University and the city here.

If you are interested or need advice about your suitability to the posts, you are encouraged to contact the Head of School, Professor Andrew Hector, or the Head of Magnetic Resonance, Dr Giuseppe Pileio, for further details. Salary will be dependent on the level you are appointed to.
