Do you have a passion for making a difference? Could you drive our work controlling an important animal disease and protecting animal welfare? Does working with dynamic science teams delivering innovative tools for disease management appeal? A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Scientist to drive delivery of our diverse and high-profile bovine tuberculosis (bTB) portfolio. The bTB portfolio works across scientific disciplines towards delivery of bTB-free status for England by 2038 and supporting devolved administrations bTB policies. The Lead Scientist has oversight of the science strategy for this work, leading, managing, and coordinating the portfolio to assure that outputs are high quality and address policy requirements. They act as the lead customer contact and are the visible face of the portfolio externally. This is an opportunity for the right individual to build a profile for themselves while making a real difference addressing a high impact issue for agriculture and the wider GB economy.

Working under the umbrella of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) is the government agency responsible for keeping the nation safe from animal disease, identifying infections that may impact on people, the environment, and the economy. We also respond to disease outbreaks, conduct scientific research, and support the international trade of animal products and plants – meaning our work is high profile and fascinating.

Inclusion, support and the development of our people matter to us. We aim to support the career and personal wellbeing of everyone in APHA.
