We seek a motivated individual, with extensive mass spectrometry experience, who wants to come and work at the University of Manchester finding new innovative ways to develop mass spectrometry to analyse molecules and to help others to translate this knowledge to something useful. We have a focus on analysis for health.

You will work with the director Professor Perdita Barran, other academic members of the MBCCMS and the Senior Technical Specialist lead for MS-SepSci (Dr. Katherine Hollywood).

Your focus will be on instrument and technique development to advance the collaborative aims of the MBCCMS which is a Centre of Excellence in Mass Spectrometry. It acts as a research hotel for around 40 groups in The University of Manchester, and supports a similar number of external collaborations with academic and industrial groups nationally and worldwide.

You will be responsible for sustaining ongoing activities, driving new developments in mass spectrometry instrumentation and assisting with the establishment of a National Centre for Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry following substantial funding from UKRI in collaboration with Waters, AstraZeneca, FuijFilm Diosynth and other industrial partners.

Specific aims will be exploitation of ion mobility mass spectrometry for structural analysis of biomolecules including soft-landing, developing robust approaches for high throughput screening of biotransformations, and developing methods for the interaction of light with mass spectrometry including its use to fragment

Shortlisted applicants will be required to submit a two-page research proposal that outlines their vision for independent research activities.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
