A rare opportunity has opened up to join us in a senior leadership position at the Central Laser Facility (CLF) to lead our Lasers for Science Division, driving forward the development and application of advanced laser capabilities and our diverse scientific programme within. This position is a senior management role in CLF within the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), with responsibility for three of the CLF’s five operational laser facilities.

About you

We are seeking an individual that has experience of managing a team of scientists, ideally in a multidisciplinary facility environment. You must have a PhD and substantial experience of research and development in at least one of the scientific areas covered by Artemis, Octopus, or Ultra.

You should be able to demonstrate experience of budget, project and safety management. With  good communication skills, you should be able to represent UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), STFC and the CLF to audiences ranging from the general public to senior scientists and decision-makers.

You will have a good knowledge of the UK science landscape and its infrastructure, be self-motivated, and be able to think strategically, articulating a scientific vision. You must be an effective problem-solver, flexible and able to work to demanding timescales. 

About The Role 

The key areas of the role include: 

  • Oversight of safe, effective operation of our laser facilities - Artemis, Octopus, and Ultra
  • managing the division budget and secure funds (internal and external) for facility operation and development
  • leading operational safety
  • working collaboratively with the CLF Director, the Group Leaders, the CLF leadership team to establish a long-term strategy for your Division, maintaining technological and scientific leadership. This requires engagement with external bodies, particularly the user community of the facilities and UK and international funding agencies
  • working with the Group Leaders to attract new academic and industrial user groups to the facilities, and develop collaborative research with partners on the Harwell Campus, in the UK, and internationally 

About us

As part of STFC, the CLF is one of the world’s leading laser facilities, providing scientists from the UK and Europe with an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology. The CLF’s wide ranging applications include experiments in physics, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, cultural heritage and the sciences of life and disease.

The CLF has around 200 staff and it is a very friendly, outgoing, externally facing sort of place.  You will find that people will naturally help and support you.

The Lasers for Science Division has around 30 operational staff members plus postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and placement students, and has an operational resource budget of approximately £1.2M (excluding staff), and a flexible operational capital budget typically around £0.5M - £0.8M per year. The three facilities deliver around 200 weeks of access to academic and industrial users.
