The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences (SRES) was created in August 2017 bringing together a diverse community of academics. SRES is recognised across the world for taking excellence in education and research equally seriously. We deliver courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, on subjects such as sports and exercise sciences and psychology, physiotherapy, sports therapy, and sports performance and coaching. SRES also presents exciting opportunities for new interdisciplinary collaborations within the university (Institute for Public Health and Wellbeing; School of Life Sciences; Institute for Social and Economic Research; the Centre for Brain Science; School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, School of Health and Social Care; and the Institute for Analytics and Data Science) and collaborative projects with (e.g., The Rugby Football Union, English Institute of Sport, Royal Ballet School, England Cricket Team, UEFA).

About the role and project

We are recruiting a senior research officer willing to work at the intersection of clinical biomechanics, musculoskeletal modelling, and biotribology. The candidate will be working on a three-year (36 month) funded project by the Medical Research Council, UK, looking at the biomechanical load safety of various physical exercises on the bone and implant health after hip and knee replacements.

The post holder will have relevant research experience in numerical simulations in medical devices, or in related fields such as finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics or tribology. Applicants with an interest in thin film lubrication, wear modelling, fluid-structure interaction and/or the applications on human artificial joints are particularly encouraged to apply. We particularly welcome applications from those who identify as female or non-binary and those from an ethnic minority as they are under-represented in the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences.

You will be based at the University of Essex, Colchester Campus. The team is made up of Dr Bernard Liew (physiotherapist, biomechanist), Professor Nelson Cortes (biomechanist), and Dr Wenxing Guo (statistician) from the University of Essex; Mr Stephen McDonnell (orthopaedic surgeon) from the University of Cambridge, and Dr Leiming Gao (biotribologist) from Nottingham Trent University. There is an overseas co-investigator, Professor Stefan Maas from the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg. There is an industry project partner, JRI Orthopaedics. There will be ample funded opportunities to visit the participating institutes, either for specialist training or knowledge exchange activities.

Skills and qualifications required

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant doctoral level degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of PhD. You will have the ability and willingness to complement and enhance the research project/department/school’s education and research strengths and areas of planned development. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are also essential for the post.
