Research Lead, Mental Health Translation

The Wellcome Trust – Psychology

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy, and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

We are looking for a Research Lead to sit within the Mental Health Translation team, to lead the development of the psycho-social portfolio of tools and interventions maximising impact in alignment with the Wellcome Mental Health Strategy.

This role is part of the Mental Health team at Wellcome, which has a long-term remit to fund research that leads to an increased ability to act earlier and to use personalised interventions to prevent people from being held back by mental health problems, focusing in on depression, anxiety and psychosis. The specific remit of the Mental Health Translation team is to identify and fund forward translation projects focussed on development of novel tools and interventions, working with partners as appropriate to ensure reach and sustainability within complex systems including in low resource settings. This may include development of novel interventions but also modification of existing ones to make them more effective and maximise impact, and may range from the cellular to the societal, whilst all the time paying attention to the specific needs of particular contexts.

You will need to have significant expertise in relation to at least one specialist area of mental health science, broadly defined, plus experience in translational research. Knowledge of psycho-social interventions would also be desirable. A PhD is not essential, but experience of conducting research in academia, industry or third sector organisations will be advantageous.

In this role you will:

  • Work with the Head of Mental Health Translation to lead the development of the psycho-social portfolio in line with the MH strategy.
  • Keep abreast of gaps and emerging opportunities in the psycho-social mental health space and identify priorities and approaches to capitalise on them.
  • Lead and support matrix teams across RP to develop and deliver key initiatives linked to the MH psycho-social portfolio
  • Maintain a presence and influence in the MH field, representing Wellcome at an inter/national level, through meetings, conferences, workshops and media.
  • Identify, build and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders, including partner organisations, to deliver key elements of the MH strategy.
  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Proven significant experience and knowledge of translation of innovation within mental health
  • Experience of setting up and delivering high profile, strategic initiatives with multi-disciplinary teams at a variety of scales
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and negotiate partnerships with key individuals and organisations internationally in public or private sectors.
  • Demonstrable experience of time and priority management- ability to distinguish urgent from important tasks/ priorities.
  • Experience working globally, ideally in the context of low-and middle-income countries.
  • Excellent delivery, logistical and problem-solving skills. Able to drive execution of objectives despite setbacks.
