Job Summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a research associate to develop models of the behaviour of mixtures relevant to pharmaceutical applications. This position is part of the SolvIT project, a wider research programme on improving the sustainability pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, a collaboration between the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering at Imperial College London and Strathclyde University. The post holder will work under the supervision of Profs. Claire Adjiman, Amparo Galindo and George Jackson.

Duties and responsibilities

You will develop models of pharmaceutical process flowsheets and state-of-the-art algorithms to optimise these processes against a range of sustainability criteria, considering the flowsheet topology, solvent(s) and process operating conditions. Optimisation techniques of specific relevance to the project include mixed-integer nonlinear optimisation and surrogate-based optimisation.

Essential requirements

  • Experience in two or more of the following areas: computer-aided molecular design, optimisation algorithms and process modelling, especially for pharmaceutical applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in chemical engineering or another relevant topic.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 – £43,888 per annum. 

Further Information

You can start immediately and ideally no later than 1 April 2024. The contract will run until 10/07/2025 in the first instance, with the possibility of extension subject to research funding. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).
