Job Description:

We invite applications from a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to join our dynamic group to develop multi-functional space borne radar capability for ISAR imagery of space objects from space. The researcher will be part of the research team within the Microwave Integrated Systems Laboratory (MISL) to work on EPSRC funded project Multi-dimensional quantum-enabled sub-THz Space-Borne ISAR sensing for space domain awareness and critical infrastructure monitoring – SBISAR,  to create a framework of novel approaches and methods for characterising objects in space.

Specific tasks:

  • Conduct a broad range of measurements of reflectivities of space objects and debris for mono-/ bi-static configurations at multiple frequencies, polarisations and incidence angles, for a range of deployment topologies and behavioural patterns of the objects
  • design a complex of verification experimental tests and perform simulation of representative targets in proprietary and commercial EM simulators
  • investigate and develop end-to end simulation modular platform, incorporating models and algorithms.
  • Use ML reinforced learning for optimization of ISAR imagery and classification.

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods 

Person Specification

  • The applicant should have a PhD (or one near to completion) in Radar, Signal processing, Physics or relevant disciplines at the time of taking up the position
  • A strong record of research and publications and familiarity with SAR and processing techniques
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
