Background

The Digital Technologies, Communication and Education (DTCE) programme sits within a dynamic team exploring the intersection of AI, design and education, particularly with regards to issues such as digital inequality, digital development and digital sustainability. The DTCE programme includes two taught Master's pathways: an on-campus programme running for almost 20 years with approximately 120 students per cohort, and a smaller distance learning programme catering to 10-20 students annually. Our team actively contributes to the DTCE Research and Scholarship Group, helping drive theoretical and practical innovations across a range of substantive areas, particularly with regards to the implications of generative artificial intelligence for education. This post is part of a strategic investment in the growth of the programme, with the intention of recruiting an ambitious colleague with a broad agenda who will fully participate in the next phase of our expansion.

The Manchester Institute of Education

The UK’s first Faculty of Education was launched at the University of Manchester in 1914, and we have been championing the vulnerable and addressing educational challenges ever since. Manchester Institute of Education (MIE) is part of the School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED), and the University of Manchester (UoM). It is currently home to over 200 members of academic staff, and over 100 postgraduate research students. We offer range of successful taught postgraduate and undergraduate courses, delivered both in-person and at a distance, which recruit over 1,000 students per year. Our initial teacher education programme is rated outstanding, and we prepare over 500 new teachers for the classroom every year.

Our world-renowned research agenda is currently delivered through seven distinct but collaborative RSGs (Research and Scholarship Groups):

  • Teacher Education and Professional Learning
  • Critical Education Leadership and Policy
  • Education and Psychology
  • Digital Technologies, Communication and Education
  • Green Research in Education Group
  • Higher Education Research at Manchester
  • Knowledge, Inequity and Activism

Underpinning our research is a shared commitment to providing communities with useful, high-value evidence that is based on the most robust of methods.

At MIE, we aim to redress staffing imbalances and to recognise the positive value of diversity. Operating in ways consistent with anti-racist and anti-sexist agenda, we seek to actively promote equality and challenge unfair discrimination. Our aim is to recruit the person who is most suited to the job, and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds – all genders, people of all ages, sexual orientations, nationalities, religions, and beliefs. However, we particularly encourage applications from women, disabled and ethnic minority candidates because these groups are currently underrepresented in the Higher Education sector, particularly at more senior levels. In Counselling Psychology specifically, we encourage applications from disabled and racially minoritised individuals.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health & wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
