About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate between Huma Therapeutics and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in Digital Health. Huma Therapeutics is a digital health company focused on remote patient monitoring and collection of patient-generated health data, and a provider of hospital-at-home and virtual ward solutions to national healthcare systems.

This project aims to develop an innovative smartphone-based digital tool to assess meaningful changes in upper and lower limb range of motion to enable remote monitoring of patient movement and face-to-face symptom consultations. The smartphone video and accelerometer data will be analysed using the latest generation AI methods as well as biomechanical models, based on precise, ground truth data collected in the QMUL Human Performance Lab. The lab, and project, is jointly run by Sports and Exercise Medicine in the WHRI and SEMS. A proof-of-concept study in a carefully selected population of patients with musculoskeletal problems will assess the added value of the tool in clinical populations.

About You

We are looking to appoint a KTP Associate with a background in human based work. The ideal candidate will have an engineering, maths, or biomedical sciences background, with experience of interdisciplinary research and some knowledge of rehabilitation. Alternatively, they could be a clinician with biomechanical or other relevant scientific skills.

The KTP Associate will gain skills in AI, digital measures, user testing, biomechanics, human performance lab experiments, and clinical applications, with supervision across these areas. There is a strong focus on training for the Associate and embedding this knowledge within the teams.

About the School/Department/Institute/Project

The Associate will be primarily based at Huma’s London Headquarters (21-24 Millbank, London, SW1P 4QP), as part of Huma’s R&D team. The Associate will also attend the QMUL human performance lab for data collection (Mile End, London), and work at the Digital Environment Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London.

About Queen Mary

At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.

Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.

Our reformer heritage informs our conviction that great ideas can and should come from anywhere. It’s an approach that has brought results across the globe, from the communities of east London to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.
