In support of this, we are currently have an opportunity for a Field and Laboratory Technician to join the team on a fixed-term basis and provide essential technical support for our “Minding the Gap for Biodiversity” research project based within the Centre for Conservation and Restoration Science (CCRS).

The Role:

The role of Field and Laboratory Technician will provide you with an excellent opportunity to use your masters degree in Ecology and experience of collecting field samples to gather valuable data from multiple sources (e.g., passive acoustic recordings, camera traps, vegetation surveys, invertebrate surveys, and environmental DNA) and take part in the associated processing of the collected data (e.g., taxonomic identification, aural and automated processing of acoustic information, visual assessment of camera trap data).

The post will offer you the chance to gain valuable experience working in a diverse range of habitats and allow you to utilise your knowledge and experience to gather information from various field sites across the Central Belt of Scotland in support of the project.

Furthermore, it will allow you to play a crucial part in the success of the project, that has links to a major UK private sector organisation and will see you forging valuable working relationships with individuals working in that space.

Most importantly, this role presents a chance for you to develop your skills in a wide range of practical field and lab-based methods and experience working on large and small collaborative research projects.

You will become an active member of the new Centre for Conservation and Restoration Science and benefit from the network and links already established within the Centre, while simultaneously developing your own professional network.

What we will need from you:

  • Masters degree in Ecology or related subject, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience of identifying invertebrates
  • Experience of working in a laboratory and in the field
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures (e.g. the use of taxonomic identification keys and stereo microscope)
  • A genuine interest in conservation and restoration
  • Full, clean driving licence, valid in the UK

Contract: Fixed-Term – 12 months with a potential extension of up to 18 months
