Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The LJMU Data Science Research Centre (DSRC) is an internationally recognised centre that conducts research in data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and applied mathematics. With over 20 years of experience in the field, the DSRC has led or co-led several UK-based and EU projects, contributing to the advancement of AI, particularly in explainable AI, causal AI, and data visualisation modelling. Recently, members of the centre were awarded two multi-million euros EU Horizon grants to support the development of AI in personalised medicine and digital twins for healthcare. The DSRC is also a member of LIV.INNO, a centre for doctoral training funded by UK Research and Innovation for data-intensive research in astrophysics. This research associate position will not only support the delivery of the current research programme within the DSRC but also contribute to external funding applications.

The duties of the Research Associate at the DSRC encompass a broad spectrum of responsibilities centred around AI and data science research. You will conduct research in line with the DSRC programme, contribute to the preparation of papers and proposals for publication and funding, and support with PhD/MSc project supervisions. Additionally, you will contribute to strengthening the DSRC network of national and international collaborators by actively attending relevant research meetings and presenting research findings orally and in writing. For some activities, you may be required to contribute to externally funded projects.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction, and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

Informal inquiries may be made to Dr Ivan Olier-Caparroso (I.A.OlierCaparroso@ljmu.ac.uk), the head of the DSRC.

LJMU, the School and the Department are committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN Gender Equality charter for promoting the career of Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) in higher education. We particularly welcome applications from women for this post and all appointments will be made on merit.
