We have an exciting opportunity for a Policy Fellow to join the University of Huddersfield and work in partnership with the Yorkshire & Humber Policy Engagement and Research Network (Y-PERN). Y-PERN is a novel network-based approach to inclusive and place-based academic policy engagement and research.

You will be a critical part of the Y-PERN structure, working across Y-PERN partner institutions and policy organisations, reflecting the increasing importance of the impact agenda in academia. Policy Fellows form a bridge between academia and the policy world, aiming to enhance the contribution of academic research to support evidence-based policymaking across the region.

Working closely with the academic lead and the West Yorkshire Housing Partnership to co-ordinate and deliver the University of Huddersfield’s knowledge exchange activity within and across the network, you will also work closely with the Y-PERN Chief Policy Fellow, and other Y-PERN Policy Fellows across the network to support delivery on the four work packages.

Our focus within Y-PERN is on the role and effectiveness of community engagement within the context of housing policy. Effective and meaningful community engagement should be at the centre in efforts to resolve social, economic and health disparities. Communities and their members should be engaged in co-identifying issues and solutions. You will take the lead in developing and shaping your own research agenda within this broad context. Our focus for this work is on West Yorkshire primarily, but with connections to the policy context across the region and nationally. In addition, it is expected that you will also take a supporting role in developing the regions Academic Research Network and work together with Migration Yorkshire on this.

The role sits within the University of Huddersfield’s Healthy Housing Initiative (HHI). Collectively, the HHI aims to empower transformative change in addressing health and wellbeing challenges through ensuring homes provide safe, secure, and healthy environments for all. An understanding of how to engage with communities and the people within them is an essential part of our work. At the heart of what we do in the HHI is to ensure our work amplifies the voice of those disproportionately and unfairly impacted by housing and health inequalities.

You will hold a doctorate qualification in a relevant social science subject (e.g. psychology, housing studies, sociology, social policy, etc.) and substantial experience in social research methods which should include (at a minimum) qualitative and quantitative methods and literature reviews.

The University is deeply committed to equality and diversity for all its students and staff. We seek to be diverse and inclusive, supporting individuals and groups to fulfil their potential and nurture a sense of belonging. We strive to be an accessible, inclusive employer, removing barriers for all. Find out more about our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, including our commitments and accreditations as a Disability Confident Employer, Stonewall Top 100 Employer, Athena SWAN Bronze Award holder and our membership of the Race Equality Charter.

Informal enquiries are welcome to Professor Phil Brown, P.A.Brown@hud.ac.uk.
