Change your career, change lives

The Open University is the UK’s largest university, a world leader in flexible part-time education combining a mission to widen access to higher education with research excellence, transforming lives through education.

Digital Services bring trusted design, data and technology know-how to the delivery of lifelong learning.

Digital Services are responsible for the digital information, systems and technologies used by staff and students across The Open University.  Covering all aspects of digital technology at the OU, from sourcing and maintaining systems, through to providing frontline IT support for staff and students.

The role

The Open University is recruiting a Lead Developer.

We are developing a new data platform to enable the staff and students within Open University to effectively utilise data that is available to them. The platform will provide a single source of data to be consumed by frontend applications via API calls. The data platform is built on Azure APIM, Azure Functions, Azure Data Factory, C#, and SAP with automated deployment to Azure cloud.

As a Lead Developer, your immediate responsibility will be to develop and support REST APIs with C# and .NET running on Azure, which will be used by  frontend applications and backend systems. This will entail producing and reviewing designs for APIs, systems, conducting research on emerging technologies and approaches and providing technical expertise and guidance.

Although this role is aligned to our Milton Keynes office, we are flexible on location across the UK, with the understanding of occasional ad-hoc attendance onsite.

Skills and experience

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in:

  • Extensive experience in C# development, .NET framework, and building RESTful APIs using latest API technologies for systems of high-volume use.
  • Strong experience in creating CI/CD pipelines for C# applications
  • Strong expertise in Entity Framework for database design and data interaction.
  • Familiarity with Azure Functions and Azure API Management (APIM) for developing serverless applications and managing APIs.
  • Good knowledge of technical platforms and impact on business systems

What you get in return

We have a strong commitment to providing training and development in and beyond your current role. This includes thorough induction into the organisation and regular reviews of your training and development needs.

We also offer a great range of benefits that support our employees and their families for the long term. Staff Benefits include an attractive pension proposition and 33 days holiday per annum pro rata, plus Bank Holidays and Christmas closure days.
