The Role
We seek a highly motivated Research Associate wishing to advance their career in a research-driven, interdisciplinary environment.

You will work under the direct supervision of Professor Pengfei Liu as an integral part of the new Research Centre for Vessel Design and Efficiency (RCVDE), responsible for one of the six theme areas of the prestigious £21.3 Million Flagship UK National Clean Maritime Research (MarRes) Hub, generously funded through a collaboration between the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Department of Transportation (DfT). Within this capacity, you will be part of a substantial consortium consisting of researchers spanning thirteen prominent universities alongside over seventy esteemed industrial collaborators from across the United Kingdom. Their primary focus will be to provide support to the Vessel Design and Efficiency thematic sector, which is under the leadership of Professor Liu.

You will collaborate closely with the MarRes Hub team at NU, along with industrial and academic partners, to jointly develop open-source tools aimed at swiftly digitising Vessel Design and Efficiency (VDE) for achieving net-zero emissions in the maritime shipping sector, both within the UK and on a global scale. Your principal mandate will involve the creation of open-source artificial intelligence (AI) tools intended to enhance vessel design and efficiency optimisation, real-time monitoring, and bolster sustainability and economic viability. This will encompass the optimisation of hydrodynamic performance for resistance and propulsion, using a hybrid approach that melds traditional optimisation methodologies with machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques.

You will form an essential part of a multi-disciplinary team and, therefore, will be expected to assist in project management, perform analysis and interpretation of results of your research and assist with that of other team members. You may need to collect and interpret data from various sources and collaborate with multiple universities and industrial partners. A budget is allocated for travel between partners and industrial sites, as well as for international conferences. You will also write up results and prepare papers for submission to the project team, appropriate journals and conferences, and other outputs as required.

This role is fixed term for 36 months and is based on site in our Newcastle campus.
