Christ Church invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to undertake research as part of a major initiative to examine its historical connections to colonialism. Understanding Christ Church’s historical links to colonialism is a priority for the foundation and its Governing Body (Board of Trustees). The post is with effect from 01 October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will complete an initial report, giving an outline of Christ Church’s historical connections to colonialism and indicating further areas for more detailed inquiry. The Fellow will then have the opportunity of exploring one such area in more detail, by means of a more focused research project. The Fellow will be supported by Christ Church’s Working Group on the history of colonialism, comprising senior academics within the foundation. Research will be evaluated and assisted by a board of academic assessors external to Christ Church.

The ideal candidate will hold a doctorate in a field connected to the history of empire, colonialism, and their imbrication in civic institutions or be close to completion in a doctorate in this area. They will have research expertise in the history of colonialism, empire (broadly defined), and their imbrication in civic institutions as demonstrated by a completed (or close to being completed) doctoral thesis and/or published or forthcoming books, articles in refereed journals, or other evidence of effective research, engagement, and communication in this field. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to present research findings effectively to a range of audiences and have experience of archival research.

The post is offered on a Fixed-Term basis, from 1 October 2024 for 3 years. Salary is £37,099 per annum (subject to review).
