Applications are invited for two Research Laboratory Technicians to join the Civil Engineering Division, which supports world-leading research and teaching. Both roles are offered on an initial three-year fixed-term basis.  One of the positions available will have a focus on soil mechanics, the other focussing on structural engineering, although the team supports activities across both areas.

The roles, which are part of Division D, have been created to provide maintenance and technical support to ensure the smooth running of the NRFIS geotechnical laboratories in the Civil Engineering Building. The roles will offer a variety of responsibilities, including working with academics and researchers to manufacture and prepare specimens, providing technical advice to students/researchers on the design of experiments, supporting students/researchers and others in practical sessions, maintaining state-of-art equipment and contributing towards ensuring safety regulations are followed. There may be an opportunity to work on research projects taking place within the geotechnical group.

The successful candidate will have practical experience in the safe use of machine tools and hand tools and experience in providing training and knowledge of specialised geotechnical laboratory activities and equipment would be an advantage. You should have a standard of education/qualification equitable to degree/level 6, or an equivalent level of practical experience. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential for this role, together with the ability to understand and explain diverse technical and design problems to researchers/students.

Fixed-term: The funds for these posts are available for 3 years in the first instance.
