About us

We are seeking to appoint a Mechanical Workshop Technician to join our technician team at UCL. This post is equally funded by two departments, Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering, and will support both departments.

About the role

The core duties of this post are the design, development and manufacture of complex novel scientific equipment, with a wide range of ferrous, non-ferrous, and plastic materials (including using exotic and difficult to work materials) whilst working at extremely high tolerances.

  • Undertake use of 3D printers, CNC machinery, laser cutters/engravers, welding apparatus and manual equipment, for the precision manufacture of complex scientific components and equipment
  • To act as the workshop specialist for CAD/CAM design & development of equipment and components, to include the preparation of engineering drawings, and the provision of comprehensive technical advice to research staff and students in order to identify the optimum solution
  • Use computer systems to research various aspects of materials and design work
  • To be able to respond quickly to the needs of the research staff and students, making full use of the facilities and specialist equipment available within E&EE, Medical Physics, and elsewhere in UCL if necessary.
  • Provide feedback to staff and students during the design process of a complex component in order to identify the optimum solution.

About you

Applicants should have a HNC in mechanical engineering or related discipline, or have served a recognised higher engineering apprenticeship. Extensive experience of CAD/CAM and CNC equipment is essential, as well as good experience of a comprehensive range of workshop equipment including; precision lathes, milling machines, surface grinding machines, sheet metal equipment, welding equipment, and precision measuring equipment.

Experience of detailed record keeping, e.g. material suppliers, designs, part numbers, version control and maintenance schedules of laboratory and workshop equipment is also required. The successful candidate will possess good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate with a wide range of people at all levels.

A strong prototype and development background is desirable, as well as knowledge and experience of use and maintenance of 3D printers and laser cutters
