About us

The Biosciences Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet.

The Barrios lab investigates the molecular and cellular basis of behaviour in C. elegans. One universal form of communication within the nervous system is through neuropeptides. Neuropeptides are secreted, difusible molecules that can act at a distance and provide flexibility in sensory processing and behavioural states. Our research aims to understand how information is encoded by this type of communication.

About the role

The Research Fellow will lead a project investigating neuropeptide spatial range of action within the nervous system in C. elegans.
In addition the research fellow is expected to be an active member of our research team, and in planning and delivery of the research activity so that the overall research objectives of the project are met. The role holder will be expected to produce independent, original contributions to the subject area.

The project will include designing and running experiments, recording, analysing and writing up results. The RF will work as part of a team to advance lab projects and in addition contribute to general lab duties such as maintaining stocks.

Interview Date(s) are scheduled for: April

This role is an open-ended contract with a funding end date of 30th April 2026 in the first instance.

Research Fellows - 'Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £34,502 - £36,348 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.'
