Technician

University of Glasgow - School of Molecular Biosciences

Location: Glasgow
Salary: £32,332 to £36,024
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 23rd February 2024
Closes: 4th March 2024
Job Ref: 140128

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and is open ended with funding available until 31st July 2027.

We have an opportunity for a Technician/Scientist to join the Ageing & Microbiota lab, (Principal Investigator Adam Dobson).

Overall job purpose is to manage technical aspects of the research on behalf of the Principal Investigator [PI], including providing specialist technical expertise in the relevant discipline and being responsible for the creation/set up and/or operation of all technical resources to aid the delivery of research objectives. In addition, the postholder will undertake a range of technical support activities in line with the College/Institute/School Strategy.

In fruit flies, our lab uses genetics, microbiology and molecular biology to understand how microbiota modulate ageing. We work in bespoke facilities for generating flies that are either germ-free or associated with specific microbiota, which in combination with molecular and genetic methods allows us to study how specific strains impact ageing by altering host signalling.

In this role you will be responsible for the smooth day-to-day running and organisation of the lab. You will manage our fly stocks and lab reagents, and work with suppliers to manage stock levels and order consumables as required.

You will also work with the PI to organise and contribute data to a long-term project. You will use fly genetic methodologies to backcross and recombine genetic tools, profile molecular function (e.g. qPCR, Western blots, metabolite stores), dissect flies and perform imaging experiments, and you will be responsible for running lifespan studies at high throughput in a sterile environment. There is funding for 40 months.

The post is in the School of Molecular Biosciences, a multi-disciplinary centre of excellence for world-leading life science research that underpins key issues facing our health and food industry sectors. We are a new department which values excellence in research and teaching, collegiality, inclusivity, and supporting the development of all staff and students. We have cutting-edge facilities, and in the 2021 REF we placed 2nd in the UK for molecular biosciences and 4th for top-quality (4*) research outputs.

Closing Date: 4 March 2024

It is the University of Glasgow’s mission to foster an inclusive climate, which ensures equality in our working, learning, research and teaching environment.

We strongly endorse the principles of Athena SWAN, including a supportive and flexible working environment, with commitment from all levels of the organisation in promoting gender equity.
