The Department of Psychology is looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate. In this role you will provide specialist research support to the Principal Investigator, Professor Richard Bentall, undertaking and overseeing the first phase of a programme of research into developmental risk factors for and the emergence of severe mental illness (SMI; bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and major depression) in young people.

This project is funded by a generous legacy to the University of Sheffield from Mary Downing, who suffered from SMI throughout her adult life. The overall aim of the project is to develop a longitudinal cohort of youth at risk of SMI and, in this first phase lasting 18 months, the aims will be to (a) review candidate psychological and biological factors that may confer risk of SMI; (b) develop a programme of public and patient involvement for the research, including liaising with the Downing family; (c) develop a protocol for the main cohort study (including research design and measure selection); (d) conduct pilot investigations; (e) obtain regulatory approval for the main cohort study; and (f) support applications for additional funding from external sources.

This is an opportunity to be involved in exciting, innovative and impactful research. While this is an 18-month contract, there may be opportunities for continued work on later stages of the project.

The Psychology Department at the University of Sheffield is among the largest in the UK and has been consistently ranked as one of the outstanding research departments in all seven UK Research Assessment Exercises to date.
