Location: London, Hybrid
Salary: £34,605 to £39,980
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 23rd February 2024
Closes: 15th March 2024
Job Ref: B02-06539

About us

The Research Department of Neurodegenerative Disease works on the study of neurodegenerative diseases causing dementia and related disorders. We focus on mechanistic dissection of genetic, molecular, cellular and neuropathological processes which underlie neurodegeneration in particular diseases and across the neurodegeneration spectrum. A related touchstone of our research is to identify pathophysiological mechanisms and markers that link molecular pathology to clinical phenotypes of neurodegenerative disease.

The Isaacs Lab, based in the Department, investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The lab is particularly interested in the C9orf72 gene, which is a common cause of both FTD and ALS and the CHMP2B gene, which is a rare cause of FTD. The lab is working to translate research findings into potential therapies using gene therapy and high-throughput screening approaches.

About the role

The Isaacs Lab has developed a novel dual-guide gene therapy approach utilising AAV9-mediated expression of CRISPR/Cas13d to suppress levels of C9orf72 sense and antisense repeat-derived transcripts.

We are looking for a Research Technician to work on the assessment of this gene therapy approach in C9orf72 patient iPS. The duties will include differentiation of iPSCs into motor neurons using small molecule-mediated differentiation, survival assays and molecular analyses of C9orf72-associated pathologies.

The role is available from 01 April 2024 and funded by LifeArc for two years in the first instance.

About you

You will have a BSc in a relevant discipline (e.g., biomedical research), experience with iPSC culture and neuronal differentiation, molecular biology techniques, such as qPCR, as well as immunostaining, microscopy and image analysis.

What we offer

As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits; visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/work-at-ucl/reward-and-benefits to find out more.

We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible, and job share basis wherever possible.
