About the Role

The post of Deputy Head of Department is an exciting senior academic role within the Department of Physics and Mathematics at Nottingham Trent University and within our School of Science and Technology. It encompasses developing and co-delivering key Departmental Priorities and Key Performance Indicators as well as a range of departmental Leadership, Management, and Operational activities. The Department of Physics and Mathematics is one of the School of Science and Technology’s six departments, with just below 40 academic colleagues. The Department has been enhancing and expanding its activities across a range of areas including Teaching (Foundation Year, BSc (Hons) Bachelors, MSci and MMath Integrated Masters, and MSc and MRes Masters), Research, Scholarship and Pedagogical innovation, Professional Practice and Community and Commercial Engagement, and Knowledge Exchange.

The post-holder should provide high calibre line management and staff mentoring/development for colleagues across the Department, and actively promote a positive culture of inclusivity. The successful applicant will manage and further develop our courses portfolio (especially including our post-graduate courses), maintain, and enhance, our high quality student experience, whilst embracing opportunities to contribute to cross-School and/or cross-University developments and initiatives. Important operational duties include resource and academic workload portfolio planning, timetabling, recruitment and selection, staff induction, facilitating accreditation, and membership of committees and working groups. As well as holding and delivering their own portfolio and accountabilities, the post holder should also provide effective and competent cover for the Head of Department.

We are looking for a well-rounded and talented academic who will excel in a recognised discipline of Mathematical Science or Physics, and who will maintain and develop their own academic standing and external profile through Teaching, and through either Practice, Scholarship, or Research activities. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and will demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude to delivering strategic change programs. They will work effectively with the Head of Department on implementing the strategic and operational priorities of a forward looking Department, within a great Science and Technology School community, and a caring University that prides itself on being an inclusive employer that has a strong reputation for supporting and developing colleagues to realise their potential.
