Summary of the role

The University of Exeter wishes to recruit a full-time BSU Manager /Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) to work as a part of the University’s Biological Research Facilities within Technical Services. This post is available on the Streatham Campus immediately on a permanent basis.

A critical member of the BSU team, the post holder will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day management of one or more of University’s BSU facilities, within the Biological Research Facilities (BRF) team. They will manage the facility(s), both in terms of maintaining animal husbandry and supporting the operational needs of a multitude of research projects, as well as the operational needs of a busy facility. The role holder will take responsibility for operational management and delivery of training, health and safety, facility maintenance, biosecurity, and security of their facility(s). They will be able to form productive working relationships with other technical and professional services staff, stakeholders, and suppliers in maintaining overall operations and culture of care within the facility.

The post holder will be expected to have a working knowledge of rodent housing systems, equipment as well as BSU infrastructure and biosecurity. They will be a competent PIL operative and will use this to support research in the facilities, including with competency assessments of PIL Holders and Animal Technicians with the NTCO.

Finally, the role holder will hold the position of Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) and in so doing will assist in ensuring that the requirements of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 are met and that the highest standards of animal welfare, in accordance with Home Office licence conditions and University policy, are maintained at all times within the facilities.
